Ownership, Reorganization, Campaign
It was my distinct privilege, and with great pleasure, that I was entrusted to lead our AAFPRS in 1996. From the outset, I committed myself to three major goals. Our first goal was to purchase our very own Academy headquarters building. Throughout the first 32 years of our history, we had been renters and I, along with many others, felt we had established our specialty and had such confidence in our future that we should have our own property. Working with Steve Duffy, we purchased our current building for $625,000, with a mortgage of about $400,000. Today, it is mortgage-free and valued at $1.2 million. My second goal was to reorganize the functional structure of the Academy and Foundation Board of Directors—its group vice presidents and committees. This required significant consultation with Academy leaders and by-laws changes. It resulted in the structure that the Academy still has to this day. Finally, my goal was to establish a joint capital campaign with the ABFRS to help pay off our new building and also support numerous other Academy programs. Our goal was $3.25 million.
I will always feel honoured to have had the opportunity to contribute to the success of our Academy and our specialty in this role.
